Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Register A Domain

  • What is a Domain Name

A domain name is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. A domain name must be unique. The domain name is what is typed into the URL bar of your browser to allow customers to find your website.

  • Why do I need a domain name?

A domain name allows you to have a unique email address or website address. These are usually far more memorable than generic addresses supplied by internet service providers and can be more effectively marketed. For example: yourname@your-business-name.co.nz

  • How come I am getting an error saying my domain name is not valid?

This is possibly because you have entered invalid characters when trying to register your domain. Make sure there are no characters such as $, #, %, &, * or spaces in your domain name. Domains names can include letter, number, hyphens (-) and underscores (_)

  • What domain name extensions can I register through Enlighten Domains?

Enlighten Domains currently offer the following domain name extensions for registration: .nz, .co.nz, .kiwi.nz, .net.nz, .org.nz, .geek.nz, school.nz, .maori.nz, .gen.nz, .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info. You must be logged into your Enlighten Domain account before you are eligible to register for an international domain.

  • How many domains can I register?

As many as you wish! So long as the domains you want are available you can register 1 domain or 1000 domains. You may choose to have multiple domain names or variations of the same domain name with different extensions (enlightendomains.co.nz, enlightendomains.kiwi, enlightendomains.com)

  • How long can I register my domain name for?

The standard registration period is one year, however you can also choose to register domains for longer periods, with a maximum registration period of 10 years. By registering your domain names for longer periods reduces your administrative time and the chance of losing it.

My Domains

  • How come my payment is due 14 days before my domain expires?

Allowing 14 days to process payment allows for any complications such as declined credit card or incorrect references on other payments giving ample time to ensure payment goes through successfully, your domain renews and remains active.

  • Is there more than one way I can pay for my domain?

You can pay now by Credit Card here. Paying by credit card is recommended as there is less admin time on your end and payments are processed faster. This means your domain will be active in no time at all.

For Direct Credit Payment our bank details are:
    Bank: ANZ Bank
    Branch: Hamilton
    Name: Enlighten Designs Ltd
    Number: 06-0317-0527089-00
    REF: [Your ProForma Number]
    Code: [Your Company Name]

  • What happens if I forget to make a payment?

If no payment is receipted before the payment due date of your domain name, your domain will be set to not renew and you will get an email notification to advise you of this. Upon expiry of your domain name, it will enter pending release for 90 days and all services related to your domain name – such as websites and emails, will not be active. Should you still require the domain name at this point you can login to Enlighten Domain and pay the outstanding balance. After receipt of payment, services will resume as normal shortly thereafter.
After the 90 day pending release period has lapsed, other people can register the domain name as their own. You will receive an email notification 1 day prior to this with a final chance to save your domain.

  • Where can I find my UDAI?

UDAI (Unique Domain Authentication Identifier) is needed to prove you are the owner of a domain. This is required if you plan on transferring your domain.
Your UDAI can be found on the My Domains page next to the domain name.
If you wish to transfer your domain to Enlighten Domains, please retrieve your UDAI from your existing provider.

  • Do you charge to transfer in or out?

There is no fee to transfer out. You are free to leave at any time. It is also free to transfer in for .nz domains. International domains have a small transfer in cost of $5 per domain. This is to cover associated ICANN transfer fees.

  • Can I transfer to another provider?

Yes, you can transfer your domain name to Enlighten Domains at no cost. If your domain is close to its renewal date you may be required to renew the domain at the time of transfer.

  • Can I transfer more than one domain at a time?

You can transfer up to 25 domains at one time as long as you have the UDAI available. This is to ensure the domains are correct before transferring them.
